Foxy Lady in Trouble! DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE

@here does anyone have Foxy Lady seed they would like to sell? Wanting to put them out but not if they’re not a true hybrid. Hybrids seem to have a higher rate of growth for some reason. The seed looks pretty elongated, so I would think it would have a lot of Vetchia characteristics. Maybe something I might try to track as time goes on.

Some died at seedling stage, and others just died a slow death, even though they were all grown in shade. They seem to have an overall hard time surviving. The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated.

• Yes the Veitchia can and has been the host, I had one growing at my former residence , it looks like a Veitchia, with yellowish petioles.
• Mine are Veitchia Joannis that we’re planted about the same time.
• The fastest way I check for viable seed is to roll the seed on concrete with my foot, giving it some moderate pressure.
• There is a slight blonde strip but that why i asked is the green form Always green or does it have.
• Where did that palm originate?

I have a Butia x Jubaea F2 that looks exactly like a Butia and growth speed is very similar to Butia. From what I understand about F2 hybrids, this result is not surprising. Kind of like a cross between foxtail fiber and the very smooth Vechis fiber.

I bought a 7 gallon from Premier Growers about 8 months ago and it’s already outgrowing the 25 gallon pot I moved it into. Here foxy gold is the palm, looks very healthy aside from the obvious cold spots on the old fronds. Are they the first two foxy ladies cultivated??? Sign up for a new account in our community. Number 1 on my personal list of favorite feather-leaved / crown shafted palms so i completely understand the allure / desire to grow one ( …or a few, lol ).. They will feel heavier than the empty seeds as well.
Difficult losing palms, but the more palms you grow, over time, we lose some; that’s how it goes. I believe most of the time the seeds never germinate but very occasionally they do. I have some flowering/fruiting foxtails near an adonidia doing the same.
So after a couple weeks of treatment, the remaining leaves are browning but I have noticed some minimal growth (a couple millimeters) of the spear. If you do the 24hr soak thing, put a weak solution of seaweed extract in the water too. This would happen far more quickly for you than it does for those of us in the humid tropics where the plant tissues survive on atmospheric moisture for ages before the final collapse. That should happen in shade and then it should be shifted up and placed gradually into more and more sun over the course of a month or two until it is hardened and can go in the ground. Do you have a FULL shade spot under some trees or overhang?

I planted a 1 gallon Cyphophoenix elgans to the east of it about 3-4 years ago, so its just starting to gain some momentum. Sorry to hear this…..time to edit and replace. The Caryota had to be edited after it flowered; this is the nature of a garden that some plant won’t outlive us. Obviously the dark spots on the trunk remain as photographed above . Two years later and the palm is still standing but also continuing to show the consistent tilt.

Myolensis triple and the (now infamous) foxy lady… Last year I added three Beccariophoenix alfredii, which I’m really liking so far due to their hardiness, and some Areca palms. I caught the “Palm tree bug” a few years ago when my wife and I wanted to add some planters to our yard, and I’ve been turned into a palm-tree nerd, as i call myself, ever since.
I did notice the dark spot on the side away from the walkway a while back, but it wasn’t really oozing anything at the time. Yeah I had one sprout a while back but had some irrigation issues to my potted plants in my absence and it ended up drying out and dying. Never noticed seed on the variegated Foxy located in another part of the collection. Floribunda had some f2 foxy ladies a while ago. The one I’m growing in Leucadia is from the same source and purchased about the same time, as this and another “Foxy Lady” I have.

• The real bummer is that I will also eventually have to remove the other big palm in that corner of the garden because it is a Caryota that will eventually flower.

• Hello, I’m a novice collector and bought a 15 gallon foxy lady from a seller in Temecula, CA about 2 and a half weeks ago.

If this one produces seed, you should be able to tell if they have a chance.. While the largest would flower & produce seed often, most seed i’d collect were empty or basically liquid when opened. The only mature ( and flowering /seeding ) specimens i’m currently familiar with are those in Kopsick’s collection. You did not get a palm that was basically bare root and a palm you specifically said you did not want!!! You got an amazing holy grail palm at a discount price.
That is how you can tell the difference between foxtail and Foxy Lady hybrid. Note the smooth texture of the seed fiber compared to a course fiber foxtail. I do not grow foxtails, so there could not be a mix up there. I have plenty of foxtails and Veitchia arecina in the yard so maybe it did a cross back with one of them to become fertile? I don’t want to give a utility an excuse to start cutting back other healthy palms in my garden that are even further from the phone lines than this one. Perhaps as a couple of adjacent palms get a little larger I’ll have to be proactive and remove it, along with a -postmortem of what was happening internally at the weeping site.
When looking at seeds on the Kopsick specimen(s), they will have a look that falls somewhere between those off Veitchia, and those off Foxtails. As far as I know it is possible for these two to hybridize. Good stuff when ever someone finds a full green or the lucky charm let me know would like a small one it’s almost like finding Waldo
